3d Scientific Meeting on Hellenistic Pottery - Thessaloniki 1991

The Third Scientific Meeting was held in Thessaloniki and was organized by the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki which is one of the largest universities in southern Europe. The topics presented were mainly related to the wider area of Macedonia.

The city of Thessaloniki is situated near the Thermaikos Bay and was founded by Cassander in 313 B.C. by unifying earlier smaller settlements of the region. During Hellenistic and Roman times, the city expanded and developed rapidly.

Its port made it one of the greatest commercial centers of the northern Aegean and the southern Balkan Peninsula in Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine times. During the Meeting which had a strong international character, two issues dominated: the dating and the composite picture of Hellenistic pottery.
